Title: Teal Paisley Tights
Author: Barbara Brutt
Publisher: Vinspire Publishing
Release Date: November 15, 2018
Genre: Contemporary Romantic Comedy

Life post-graduation was supposed to see the launch of paisley-loving Jadyn’s art career, or at least an art gallery showing one of her watercolor paintings. Instead, this Pittsburgh native is locked into a low-paying, buttoned-up consultant position with an impossible boss. When another colleague is dismissed, Jadyn inherits extra workload, including the company’s biggest client. If she loses him, she’s fired.

Jadyn people-pleases her way through life, resulting in extra work opportunities and a community classroom of art students. But when two guys appear on her doorstep, she just might not be able to people-please her way out of this love triangle. At the end of the day, she can’t please everyone.

Then, because of a small spending problem, Jadyn is evicted from her apartment, and she must move in with her know-it-all sister. Jadyn needs to decide between a job transfer that would place her near her love interest, or a full-time art career with all its risks.

Stretched like canvas between responsibility and dreams, she must choose. Will practicality always win?

Nothing made me more nervous than the thought of a cover design for Teal Paisley Tights. We always say, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” And yet, don’t you?

I know that I absolutely do judge a book by its cover. The cover is often the reason that I lift a book off a shelf. It’s the reason that I flip to the book back cover copy. And that, my friends, is the author’s toe in the door. Our stories need good book covers.

When Vinspire Publishing offered to publish Teal Paisley Tights, an artist friend of mine celebrated the moment with me by creating a mock-up cover—fan art, one could say. Who am I that I have fan art! But I loved the concept. She had focused on the teal paisley tights and Jadyn’s artistic flair. Of course, I knew that my friend’s cute mock-up cover couldn’t be used because the publisher had their own graphic designers.

As the time came for a cover to be created for the story, Vinspire Publishing worked with me to figure out the important elements of the story for the cover. Obviously, teal paisley tights had to play a big role. And we determined that the cover should have a more drawing type feel…no real-life people.  (insert laughing emoji here)
One challenge that most authors and graphic designers probably experience is the transfer of vision. Of course, I also didn’t really know what I wanted. But, that’s a whole other frustration.

Worried as I was about the final cover, I finally thought, “Why don’t I send the mock-up cover that my friend created as a touchstone?” After all, we take photos of haircuts to the salon so why not picture ideas to a graphic designer?
The publisher assured me that the picture would be taken into consideration for the cover design. And echoing in the back of my head was another old saying, “A picture’s worth a thousand words.” Ha! I guess I could tell Jadyn’s story in 80 pictures then?

A few days later, I opened an email from the publisher with the cover attached. May I admit something to you? I was afraid to click that email open. I took deep breaths. But when I scrolled to the attachment, breathe whooshed out of my lungs. The lovely cover that you all have seen for the past few months was there.

The cover of Teal Paisley Tights captures the playfulness of the story, and the bright colors catch the essence of fun that’s in store. The pink and orange watercolor-esque background is an understated head nod to Jadyn’s dream to be a watercolorist. And, can we all just drool over those shoes for a moment? Jadyn may be chaotic, spastic, and too busy for her own good, but she does like style!

I’m a bit biased when it comes to Teal Paisley Tights. But I’ve judged the cover by the story, and I think the book cover represents the story wonderfully well. Yay, thank you, Vinspire Publishing!

One of the most cheery things said to me recently was, “I’d pick that book up off the shelf because of the cover.” Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner!
