Catching Christmas

This Year, Christmas Comes Just in Time

As a first-year law associate, Sydney Batson knows she will be updating her resume by New Year’s if she loses her current court case. So when her grandmother gets inexplicably ill while she’s in court, Sydney arranges for a cab to get her to the clinic.

The last thing cab driver Finn Parrish wants is to be saddled with a wheelchair-bound old lady with dementia. But because Miss Callie reminds him of his own mother, whom he failed miserably in her last days, he can’t say no when she keeps calling him for rides. Once a successful gourmet chef, Finn’s biggest concern now is making his rent, but half the time Callie doesn’t remember to pay him. And as she starts to feel better, she leads him on wild goose chases to find a Christmas date for her granddaughter.

When Finn meets Sydney, he’s quite sure that she’s never needed help finding a date. Does Miss Callie have an ulterior motive, or is this just a mission driven by delusions? He’s willing to do whatever he can to help fulfill Callie’s Christmas wish. He just never expected to be a vital part of it.

My Perspective

The story was a complete joy and surprise to me. I have only read Blackstock’s suspense novels, so when I saw she was tackling a Christmas Romance novel, I was intrigued and couldn’t wait to dive in. Christmas is my favorite time of year, and I have high standards for Christmas novels. I want them to have a certain feel, a certain message, and above all make me smile. Don’t worry – Blackstock managed to go above and beyond my standards.

First of all, this story is different. A cab driver helping a lady with dementia? You had me at that sentence alone. What Finn needed most was redemption and love. Sometimes guilt can really eat away at us, and Finn is the perfect example of that. It comes out slowly throughout the story, and the more time he spends with Miss Callie, the more you understand why he sticks around, why he goes above and beyond. Her hunt for a boyfriend for her granddaughter I found to be sweet, and had me chuckling a few times. I could totally picture someone in my life doing the same thing for one of her granddaughters. I found Miss Callie very sweet, endearing, and a joy to read about.

In addition, you have the story line for Sydney, the girl who needs to prove herself in order to keep her job at the law firm. As I read her scenes, I wondered to myself how many associates need to do the same, and go to a courtroom and basically leave their morals at the door so they can win a case. I found the case Sydney was working on to be really interesting, and I enjoyed seeing how she handled herself, not only in the courtroom but also while dealing with the defendant’s father. You’ll have to read it yourself to see what I am talking about!

Overall, this was a charming feel-good Christmas story that will warm your heart. I hope that Blackstock considers writing more of these in the future. I know this girl will be first in line to buy them if she does 🙂 I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thank you for your review on “Catching Christmas” by Terri Blackstock and for being part of the book tour.

This sounds like a fabulous book and one that I would greatly love having the opportunity to read. It is on my TBR list.

I really enjoyed Catching Christmas. Though it took a little while to like Finn, I found all of the characters interesting. I felt so sorry for Sidney, caught between her very demanding job and the need to be there for her grandmother.
