First Line Friday – Novella Edition

Posted by abakersp in First Line Friday / 20 Comments

Happy First Official Friday of Summer! Here it’s been summer temperatures for awhile, but at least the calendar agrees with them now. Today I am happy to share the first line of the novella I am reading. I like reading novellas, don’t you? I can sit there and typically read them all at once, in a short amount of time, but still feel like I got a good story out of it. Now this one feels a little long for a novella – it is 200 pages according to Amazon, but I think you could probably read it in a few sittings.

Today’s first line comes from a talented young writer who spent 16 years of her life in Papua New Guinea. Now, I have to tell you that I am immediately drawn to her and feel like we have a connection. My church supported missionaries in Papua New Guinea that were there to help translate the Bible for the residents there. I wonder if they knew each other? Sorry, off topic. Where were we? Ah yes, Kara Swanson is the lovely author we are featuring today. Her latest novella The Girl Who Could See is different than anything I’ve read recently, and I enjoyed that tremendously! I hope you’ll give it a try!

On Television crime shows, they never tell you how cold it is.

  1. I just finished reading this last week. Loved it! So original!

I have the first line from Kara Isaac’s AMAZING new release “Then There Was You” on my blog, but I’ve been sharing the first line “The Girl Who Could See” in the comments. Guess I don’t need to do that here! So instead, I’m going to share the first line from a book I just started less than ten minutes ago: “Turtles in the Road” by Rhonda and Kaley Rhea. I’m only a couple of chapters in and it is SO. FUNNY!

“Normally a nice long solo drive had a calming effect on Piper.”

ACH! That makes me so, so happy that you read TGWCS and enjoyed it 🙂 Thank you!

  2. This is on the top of my TBR pile. I haven’t read any by her and I keep hearing about this book.

I’m sharing from a book I just finished a couple days ago, Mistakenly Married by Victorine Lieske: “Penny wrung her hands and walked to the back of the room.”

Thank you! I hope you enjoy it 🙂 This is actually my “debut” work as a single author (I co-authored a fantasy novel at 17). It’s a novella though, so not quite as fancy as a full novel, but that shall follow eventually 🙂

    Sounds intriguing!

Suzie shivered at Carson Snotte’s words, not the March air with its hint of lingering winter. Barely Above Water by Gail Pallotta

  4. My first line is from a chapter book for kids ~ “Mandy,” by Julie Andrews Edwards.

“On the outskirts of a pretty country village called St. Martin’s Green, there stands a large, white house called St. Martin’s Orphanage.”

My first line is from Sweetbriar Cottage by Denise Hunter: “There was nothing like a letter from the IRS to stop a man in his tracks.”

  6. Two Kara Swanson features today! (If I got the name straight anyway 😉 ) I’ll have to try her sometime.

On my blog is the first line from “Promise Me This” by Cathy Gohlke, but here I’ll share the first line of the book I got in the mail yesterday: “Heart on the Line” by Karen Witemeyer! This will be my first to read of hers…
“The cheerful tinkle of a bell alerted Grace Mallory to the arrival of a guest.”

Hehe I would be most honored if you’d give “The Girl Who Could See” a try 🙂

  7. I’ll share a different line here than the one on my blog, just to keep things interesting! Last night I started reading Amber Lynn Perry’s new book “So Pure a Heart”.
“Alone, Hannah Young stared at the dirt-covered mound as the chilled air breached the warmth of her heavy cloak.”

From a book, I finally got to read from my TBR list.
The little hairs on the back of Allegra Spencer’s neck stood at attention.
First line from Count Me In by Mikal Dawn

  9. I just met Kara Swanson at the conference I am currently attending and purchased her novella. She is a wonderful person. I only meant to read the first page but wound up reading the whole first chapter! I didn’t want to stop reading.
