Hello friends! Welcome to His Encouragement, a weekly dose of biblical encouragement to help get you through your week! Make sure you check out what my friends have to say too. Let’s all encourage each other!
The world can be hard to deal with. Whether you are going to work and are surrounded by unsaved individuals, or going to the grocery store among people who wear inappropriate clothing and talk about things you don’t want to hear, or you go to school surrounded by alternative lifestyles and ideas of fun. I have, however, found a coping mechanism that works pretty good for me.
Okay, I don’t just belt out a song for the world to hear (well in my car I do!). But I do sing songs in my head all day long. I’m not kidding you!
“Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord” Ephesians 5:19
There are several verses in the bible about praising and worshiping our Lord, but this one in particular really speaks to me. Probably because I’m not the greatest singer in the world, but this reminds me that God thinks we are making a melody – and really that’s all that counts.
Side note – when I just belt out a song at home, and my family looks at me like I’m crazy, I remind them that God thinks I sound beautiful 😉
Anyways, back to today’s topic. Music makes me happy, and calms my soul. When I’m at work and things get frustrating, I think of a song. Sometimes several songs will play through my mind, and it’s no coincidence the songs that enter my mind are ones that remind me to lean on the Lord, and that this is just a temporary place for me.
What kinds of songs do you ask? Well, I will admit it’s not always hymns from church. I know different people have differing thoughts on the music Christians should listen to. My thought is this – I don’t care what kind of music is in the background – if the words are uplifting and honoring to the Lord, then it’s just fine with me. So yes, I sing songs that are on Christian radio. Some of them are rock sounding, some pop sounding, and some more traditional. And yes, sometimes those wonderful hymns do come to mind and I sing them too! I don’t discriminate when it comes to uplifting music to honor God. I just sing them all!
Do you have songs that help you get through your day? I’d share a list with you, but it’d be about a mile long. Honestly, there could be a song that I haven’t heard in months, and all of a sudden there it appears in my head at just the right moment. God is good at doing that! But I’m always looking for more songs. I hope you’ll share them in the comments!
What’s been on your heart this week friends? I hope you’ll share in the comments, and please don’t forget to visit my friends and see what they’re sharing this week!
