About the Book

An undercover English DEA agent will do anything to protect the Amish girl he loves.
Calvin Fisher left the Amish community at fourteen and never looked back. Only his brother’s illness can bring him back to Hart County. Now, as Calvin works to make amends, he meets Alice, a local nursery school teacher, and falls hard for her. But he has a secret that could threaten the happiness he’s finally found.
Alice shouldn’t like-or want-Calvin. He’s English, has a questionable past, and an even more questionable job. Still, she can’t help being intrigued. Though Calvin assures Alice that he’s worthy of her, she’s torn between surrendering to her growing feelings and steering clear of him.
When a sudden surge of criminal activity alarms the community and even targets Alice, Calvin fears that his double life has put everyone he loves at risk. As for Alice, she can’t help but wonder if the brave and honorable man she’s lost her heart to is far more dangerous than she could ever imagine.
My Perspective

Calvin Fisher just may be my favorite ex-Amish character ever. He’s got the bad boy vibe going, the caring guy vibe going, and the undercover secretive vibe going. I mean, just tug on a girl’s heart why don’t ya! I’m not sure where Shelley Shepard Gray comes up with her characters, but they have certainly been entertaining and interesting lately! Let me start by saying this is NOT your typical Amish story, which seems to be becoming a theme lately in Amish fiction. Maybe the genre itself is advancing. I think it’s safe to say that even if Amish fiction is not your thing, stories like His Risk may pull you in with storylines featuring a gang, undercover work, and a touch of romance. As a reader, I am always looking for something different in a genre like this. I want excitement and surprises. This book delivered and exceeded my expectations.

Perhaps the biggest surprise to me however, came from West’s character. I won’t go into the storyline because it will give things away, but I will say this. West proves that inside of each and every person out there is a good guy. There is someone who wants to love and wants love in return. Sometimes it takes the right person or circumstances to bring that out, but it is possible. Frankly, it reminded me not to judge people so harshly based on appearances, or other stereotypical things. You don’t know the heart of someone, but Jesus sure does. And we should be seeing people as He does.

Overall I think that Amish fiction fans will walk away surprised, and new Amish fiction fans will be delighted in this story. I like traditional Amish fiction love stories as much as the next person, but sometimes you need a little mystery and excitement. Keep them coming Shelley Shepard Gray. I can’t wait to see what the characters in the next book are like! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

  2. This was my favorite of the series. I love when the story has so much going on, not just a typical Amish romance.
