Interview with Jen Turano and a Giveaway!!

Good morning reader friends! What better way to start the week then by chatting with the wonderful Jen Turano! Her latest book, Caught by Surprise, is amazing. Well, all of her books are really. I was only introduced to her books last year, but it didn’t take long for me to be captivated by her stories and writing style. Today we’re talking about books, swoonworthy characters, kryptonite and more! Please join me in welcoming Jen to the blog, and be sure to look out for the giveaway opportunity after the interview!!!

Interview with Jen Turano

You’re stranded on an island with one character from any book you’ve ever read. Who would you want to be stranded with and why?

Okay, so this is a tough one because I’m notorious for not remembering my characters – but…I think I’d like to be stranded with…Gertrude Cadwalader or Agatha Watson. They were very no-nonsense types, and I imagine they’d be great with survival skills.

If it were me, I would need someone with great survival skills! I would need all the help I could get!

What’s the funniest/strangest thing you’ve come across on google while researching?

So I was researching gentlemen clubs – yeah, not the best thing to google, especially when I didn’t type in historic gentlemen clubs in NYC. My eyes will never be the same, and don’t even get me started on the odd advertising notices I still get in my sidebar.

Oh my! I hate those pesky advertising notices!

Do you have a writing kryptonite?

I do – and it’s normally these scenes I get fixated on – scenes I’m sure are going to be brilliant, but then end up throwing off the pacing of the story. I once wrote an entire chapter with the heroine conversing with a dog – now, I thought it was hilarious, but the reality was this – I write quirky romances, not dog stories. Honestly….

I mean, I would have liked to read the heroine talking to the dog lol. Maybe that could be a “deleted scene” on your website!

You’re a new addition to a crayon box. What color would you be and why?

Purple glitter, because how fun is that? Although, that’s not really a great name – perhaps purple razzle? Or…nope, nothing else is coming to me.

I think purple razzle suits you!

If one were to glance at your night stand, what would they see, prior to you cleaning it up of course?

My night stand is currently host to a box of tissues, a phone charger, two bottles of Advil, a box of band-aids, (no idea what I needed those for) three books, a coaster, but it’s not a real coaster, it’s a piece of mole-skin that doubles as a coaster because I just haven’t gotten around to bringing a real coaster upstairs, and five hair holder things – you know, the ones that look like rubber bands???

Hey, you never know when you might cut yourself on your mattress 😉

What are you currently reading?

“The Harvey Girls – Women Who Opened the West.” Clearly, I’m getting ready to write a new story – just a novella, but I don’t know that much about the Harvey Girls. I watched that movie with Judy Garland, but it didn’t really do much for me.

Can’t wait to read it! Although, maybe I should read up on the Harvey Girls too. I don’t know much about them either!

Favorite binge-worthy show right now?

I just re-watched “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Oh, the fashions are just to die for and the setting is fabulous.

Sometimes it’s all about the fashion! I can sit for hours just watching a show for the wardrobes!

Of all your books, which swoonworthy hero is your favorite and why?

I really adore Mr. Harrison Sinclair. He’s just so charming, as well as fashion-challenged, but I also really like Mr. Theodore Wilder from clear back in the day. He was just such a guy….

YES! To both of course…..

What’s the one snack food you cannot live without?

I’ve been on this mad diet, so I’m currently living without all the snacks I used to enjoy – like chips, or ice cream, or…well, I could go on and on.

That is one thing I hate about diets!

What can readers look forward to in the future?

Caught By Surprise Cover

Next up is a new series – The American Heiress Series. First book, “Flights of Fancy” will release in January 2019. I thought I’d try an heiress series with a twist – so we’ll see how this goes.

I can’t wait to read this! The cover is beautiful.

Thanks for chatting with me today!

Thanks for having me, Jessica!!!

  1. It is impossible to choose just one! I LOVE all of her books! If I had to choose one, it might be “After a Fashion” just because I love refashioning clothing 🙂

    1. Thank you, Nicole!!! “After a Fashion” is one of my favorites as well!!! I must admit, though, that I’m not great with sewing – had a ton of tailoring classes in college, but I just wasn’t proficient with it – I do believe I’m the only person in my class who put the interfacing on the wrong side of the fabric 🙂 Thanks for stopping in!!!

    1. Ah, “Finding Margo” – my one and only contemporary. I am hoping to get back to that genre at some point, but no idea when. Thanks for stopping in!!

  2. Omigosh! I’ve never read one of Jen’s books, but I’ve heard so many good things that I’m dying to get my hands on one! Maybe this will be my chance. Thanks for the opportunity!

    1. Hi Melissa!! And..what??? You’ve not read any of my books??? Well, we’ll need to remedy that. If you have an e-reader, I do have two free novellas out there -“Gentleman of Her Dreams” and “At Your Request.” They’re short, but complete stories, and will give you a bit of a taste of my writing style. Good luck with the giveaway!!!!

  3. I’m going to confess I haven’t read Jan Turano yet but I have a few of them on my TBR. Her next one looks looks intriguing too! Whoever designs her covers does an AMAZING job… just sayin.

    1. Hi Becca!!

And yes, I do get some amazing covers – the design team at Bethany House is just fabulous – not that I have much to do with the covers – I merely send in a character/setting sheet and they take it from there!! Good luck with the giveaway!!

  4. Got hooked when I started with Gertrude in Out of the Ordinary. They are all so good! My favorite right now is After a Fashion. What a great interview. I would love to hear about the “deleted scene,” too!

    1. Thank you so much, Kathleen!!! And wasn’t Gertrude just so much fun??? She’s one of my very favorite heroines, but don’t tell anyone since that would cause me all sorts of trouble with my other ladies 🙂 Have a great week!

  5. I have yet to read a novel of yours, Jen, but I have several on my TBR, and this one looks marvelous too! Sometimes you just know which author’s books are going to become your new best friends!

    1. Thank you, Teri – now, get going with that TBR pile 🙂 My pile is out of control at the moment, but that does seem to be how it is all the time. Good luck with the giveaway!!!!

    1. Thank you so much, Alyssa!!! “Out of the Ordinary” was a blast to write -especially the scene where Harrison is trying out some romantic gestures 🙂 Have a great week!!

  6. Favorite answer: the crayon color. I can’t help it, purple is my favorite color so purple glitter, or purple razzle, it’s perfect. I have never had the pleasure of reading any Jen Turano novels, but I would love the opportunity.

    1. Hi Tabitha!!

Funny story about the purple glitter – my little neighbor decided we needed to have matching toenails – so she convinced me to paint my nails with this purple sparkly polish – honestly, it won’t come off – I’ve tried everything – I’ve now got an appointment at the nail salon and I’m hoping they’ll have greater success! Good luck with the giveaway!!

  7. I have never read any of her books, but I have heard such great things about them! Thanks for the opportunity!

    1. Hi Nicole!!

Thanks for stopping by – and since you haven’t read any of my books, if you have an e-reader, check out “Gentleman of Her Dreams” or “At Your Request.” They’re FREE!!! Good luck with the giveaway!!

    1. Hi Susanne!!

Amusing books are my favorites, followed by really scary suspense – which is somewhat odd, now that I think about it. Good luck with the giveaway!!!

  8. Hi Jessica & Jen *waving*
I enjoyed reading this fun interview!! I have loved ALL of Jen’s books, my current favorite is Caught by Surprise! I have a copy, so don’t enter me in the giveaway. <3

  9. Well, I guess I would have to say At Your Request is my favorite, because that is the only one I have read so far. After reading it though, I wanted to read more, so that is a good thing!

    1. Hi Colleen!!!

That is very good indeed that you enjoyed “At Your Request!!!” It’s actually the prequel novella to this entire series, “Caught by Surprise” being the final book. Good luck with the giveaway!!!

  10. The interview was so great! I believe my favorite so far is A Match of Wits. But I do have Behind the Scenes on my real shelf and others on my virtual shelf. Thanks for the chance to win this book! paulams49ATsbcglobalDOTnet

    1. Hi Paula!!

Ah, “A Match of Wits!” It seems like forever ago that I wrote that book, but I did love writing Agatha’s story, and then, well, there’s Matilda 🙂 Good luck with the giveaway!!!

  11. I’ve only read her novella in All for Love but I really enjoyed that one. She is very entertaining!

  12. Okay, so I haven’t read Jen’s books YET but I really want to. They sound fantastic. I know I will enjoy the quirky characters and historical romance is where I live! Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

    1. Hi Karen!!!

Delighted you’ve not run across one of my books you didn’t care for yet 🙂 Always good to hear!!! Thanks for stopping by and good luck with the giveaway!!!

  13. The main character of caught by surprise looks like a sassy female, and sassy females appeal to me! I’d love to read it.

    1. Thanks for stopping in, Suzanne!!! And yes, Temperance Flowerdew is a bit sassy, although she didn’t start out that way – I’d intended for her to be more on the lines of timid, but after the first book, she decided that wasn’t going to work for her – who was I to argue??? Good luck with the giveaway!!!

  14. I have not read any of Jen’s books yet, but I have them on my want-to-read list. They look and sound like the kind of books I would enjoy reading.

    1. Now all that’s left to do, Amy, is to get those books off your want-to-read list and on your already read list 🙂 Good luck with the giveaway!!!

  15. I’ve not read any of her books yet. I’d love to because many recommend her work! 😀

  16. I haven’t read any of Jen’s books yet, but I have several of them on my TBR list! I love historical Christian fiction and have heard wonderful things about her fun characters and how she brings history to life through her stories. Thank you for the chance to win her latest novel, Caught by Surprise! It sounds delightful!!! nj(dot)bossman(at)gmail(dot)com

  17. I do love them all but I would have to say her first book, because of the surprise of finding her writing style and hardly believing that it was really going to be as fun as I had hoped! Love her and her books!

    1. Always love when you stop in to chat, Diane!!! I think you were one of my very first readers – so glad you’ve stuck with me over the last few years!!! Appreciate the support!!!

  18. The only Jen Turano book I’ve read is her novella “At Your Request”. I found it delightfully funny, witty and engaging! So of course, I want more 🙂

Thanks for the fun author interview and chance to win a copy of Caught by Surprise!

  19. I haven’t had the pleasure to read any of your books yet. I’m always looking for new authors to read. The cover intrigues me and if I’m not fortunate enough to win, then I will be purchasing it to read!

    1. Thank you so much, Joy – and just so you know, the very first book in this series, “Behind the Scenes” is on sale for e-book for only $.99 until Friday – and, there is a prequel novella to this series, “At Your Request” which is free for e-book!! Good luck!!

  20. I love all of Jen’s books. Playing the Part is one of my favorites. I’m fairly sure that is the one that has a really funny scene involving goats. I love her mix of humor, romance, and adventure. I don’t yet have a copy of Caught by Surprise so I’m glad to have a chance to win a signed copy. Thanks for the giveaway.

    1. Pam!!! So glad you stopped in – and the goat…so here’s the thing with that goat – Geoffrey I think I named him – he wasn’t in the first few drafts – but then, I got stuck – couldn’t figure out how to get Lucetta out of that tower – and then, as I was being all dramatic – you know, saying I was all washed up – had nothing left – was a total hack – this goat sprang to mind and…I was back in business 🙂 It’s so weird how that happens. Good luck with the giveaway!!!

  21. I have enjoyed reading many of Jen’s books. It all started with A Change of Fortune and I was hooked. Love her quick wit and humor! Can’t wait to read this newest book!

  22. Ahh! Super fun interview!
I can’t choose just one book, they are all my favorite!
    ttmom42 at gmail dot com

  23. I have not read any of Jen Turano’s books, but Caught by Surprise sounds very interesting.

  24. Out of the Ordinary, but I am sure once I finally get ahold of Caught by Surprise, I’ll say that is my new favorite. Isn’t that usually the way? 🙂 Fun interview; thanks for the chance to win!

  25. I’ve never read one of Jen’s books but I want to because they sound light and fun! I gave one to a friend as a gift and she went out and bought the rest of the series because she loved it so much!

  26. I’ve read After A Fashion and fell in love with your writing style and sense of humor. I NEED to read more of your books 🙂

  27. I have enjoyed the books I have read by Jen. They are entertaining. I really could not choose just one. A Class of their Own series is one of the first series I read. They hooked me:).

  28. I haven’t read any of her books yet as I’ve just “discovered” that I enjoy Christian fiction. From what I’ve been reading in reviews of Jen’s books, she would be a fun author to start with in this genre.

  29. I haven’t read any of her books ,but this cover is beautiful and the girl so intriguing that I just want to read this book. Thank you for the chance and I also want to read some of her other books, they sound so good.

  30. I guess my earlier comment didn’t go through. I have read several of Jen’s books, but I particularly enjoyed Behind The Scenes. Good stories with a bit of humor!

  31. It is hard to choose a favorite, but I think I will go with “A Change of Fortune” as my favorite. Her novels are always so fun.

  32. I think if I had to choose I’d say “A Most Peculiar Circumstance.” Arabella was one of my favorite characters, and I loved Theodore. It was so much fun getting to know them and watching their relationship evolve.

  33. Jen Turano is a new-to-me author. But I would love to read her books because I’ve heard great things about them, the plot and characters in this book sound intriguing and want to read more books in the historical romance genre.

  34. I haven’t read any of your books yet…but they sound so exciting…looking to pick one up soon!
