Left wounded by a marriage cut short, Suzanna Wilton leaves city life to take up residency in a tiny Nebraska town. Her introduction to her neighbor Paul Rustin is a disaster. Assuming he’s as underhanded as the other local cowboys she’s already met, Suzanna greets him with sharp hostility.
Though Paul is offended by Suzanna’s unfriendliness, he can’t stop thinking about her, which unsettles his peaceful life. A hard-fought friendship slowly kindles something more, but just as Paul’s kindness begins to melt Suzanna’s frozen heart, a conflict regarding her land escalates in town. Even in the warmth of Paul’s love, resentment keeps a cold grip on her fragile heart.
Will Suzanna ever find peace?

My Perspective

Sometimes we have to be thrown into new surroundings, in the middle of nowhere, in order to deal with any demons we’re battling. I think that is why Suzanna was sent to her father’s place in Nebraska. Suzanna was a strong, determined main character, yet did show compassion for others. The thing is, even strong woman need to be a little vulnerable at times in order for growth to happen, both emotionally and spiritually. It’s times when we are most vulnerable that we also remember our need for Christ. This book did a beautiful job in showing Suzanna’s growth. It was gradual yet noticeable. Little by little her walls came down until she reached the point of no return.

The character I found myself smiling over the most was Paul’s sister Andrea. She had a wit about her – she wasn’t afraid to tell it how it was. And she certainly wasn’t shy! I like that she was real and honest with Suzanna, and I found myself wishing I had just moved to Nebraska and made her as a friend. I love when authors really give the supporting characters some depth, instead of just having them there to take up writing space. She added a fun element to the story.

Overall I enjoyed this book very much. I liked seeing Paul and Suzanna kind of come into their own sort of relationship, but the banter didn’t totally stop. I had a few chuckles and couldn’t wait to find out what had happened to Suzanna to make her the way she was – a little hard, but obviously a woman who had gone through a lot.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
