I have been reading Amish books by Shelley for years and have always enjoyed them. I know Shelley has written other types of books, but have never been ready to take the first step in trying them. You know how you associate an author with a certain kind of book and are afraid you won’t like it when they go in a different direction? That was not the case with this book at all. I dove right in and finished the book in two days. It was that captivating to me!
From the very beginning my heart went out to Miranda Markham. I could not imagine having an entire town against me and spreading rumors about my deceased husband, saying he was a traitor! I’m not sure I would have been able to go to the bank to make my deposits as she did. When Robert Truax showed up at her doorstep, I was hoping that love was in the air and he would be able to pull her away from her depression!
I loved reading about their budding friendship. Robert was so protective of Miranda, and not just because of his military background, or a promise he kept to her deceased husband. I could see he was truly starting to care about her and wanted to protect her from whomever was writing threatening letters.
This book had a touch of suspense in it as well. I will be honest, I thought I had the villain down from the beginning, but I was wrong! I won’t spoil it for you, but I love it when things turn out differently then I expect! Shelley did a wonderful job in weaving the pieces of the story together for the ultimate ending. Her story telling abilities never cease to amaze me and I am so glad I decided to give this book a try.
I highly recommend this book to those who have read Shelley’s books, as well as those who love a historical novel with mystery and a touch of love. You will not be disappointed! I was given a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review which I have given.
