Mysterious Disappearances Taint the Chicago World’s Fair
Step into True Colors—a new series of Historical Stories of Romance and American Crime
While attending the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, Winnifred Wylde believes she witnessed a woman being kidnapped. She tries to convince her father, an inspector with the Chicago police, to look into reports of mysterious disappearances around the White City. Inspector Wylde tries to dismiss her claims as exaggeration of an overactive imagination, but he eventually concedes to letting her go undercover as secretary to the man in question—if she takes her pistol for protection and Jude Thorpe, a policeman, for bodyguard.
Will she be able to expose H. H. Holmes’s illicit activity, or will Winnifred become his next victim?

My Perspective
Hitchcock has landed a place on my to-watch list for both historical and suspense fiction. She managed to capture the essence of the time period and setting – Chicago’s World Fair in 1893, and put my investigative instincts to work all at the same time. On top of that, she made me smile and chuckle over Winnifred and Jude. Jude sparked something in Winnie, kind of pushed her to be herself without her even realizing it. Their relationship was so natural, and I really liked the way she was around him.
Winnie is really my kind of character. She’s fun, determined, and smart. She wasn’t afraid to stand for what she thought was happening, even as she made mistakes through the investigation. And the way she acted around her “potential suitors” courtesy of her overzealous Aunt were a hoot to read.
This is a very strong start to what promises to be an exceptional series, as well as the start to (hopefully) a wonderful future in writing for Ms. Hitchcock. Two things to be excited about – the next book in this series, and what Hitchock is going to write about next!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
