Top Ten Tuesday – Books I Would Recommend to Someone My Daughter’s Age

Happy Tuesday reader friends and welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl! Today I’m going away from the posted topic and doing something different. How many of you have teenage daughters, nieces, granddaughters, or just young women that you know? I have a fifteen year old daughter, and while our reading tastes are a little different, I got looking at my Goodreads list (um….I wish I had started tracking things on Goodreads YEARS ago!) and started picking out which books I thought she might like. Which leads me to today’s topic – the Top Ten books I would recommend to my daughter, or any young woman for that matter. One thing to note – my daughter is a little ahead of her time, so some of these books I’m suggesting may not be for all teenagers. Use your own discretion, as with any book 🙂

A Loyal Heart by Jody Hedlund

This book has a beautiful example of waiting on the Lord in terms of relationships and being physical with each other. And truly just an all around wonderful read!

Justice by Emily ConradFor those of you who know the plot line behind this book, you’re probably thinking I’m crazy right now. (for those of you who don’t know, there is an out-of-wedlock pregnancy, and some difficult topics discussed) Again, my daughter is a little ahead of her time, and I would feel totally comfortable letting her read this. First of all, it will bring up some great discussion about what she needs to watch out for as she grows up and heads off to college. But second, there is a character in this book that I want her to marry. Yes, I know that can’t happen obviously, but I think that Jake’s character has a lot of qualities that she should look for in her future husband. This book is a great example of trusting in the Lord to take care of you – and that is exactly the message a teenager needs to hear before they go into the real world!

Embracing Hope by Janell Butler Wojtowicz

This book takes place in a college setting. What better way to prepare someone for college by giving them a view into the college scene? This is just another book that I think would make a great conversation piece – read it together!

Leaving (Bailey Flanigan, #1)

Bailey Flanigan is a role model for young girls today. But what struck me most about this book was when Bailey started a bible study group with her acting friends. There is a scene where she happens to be speaking with a person who is gay and is trying to show them God’s love. She isn’t forceful, judgmental, or condemning. She simply shares the bible in a way that makes this person want to learn more. I want my daughter to see that example, because let’s face it. We live in a sinful world and there are people like that everywhere we go. But just because they live that way doesn’t mean they don’t need to hear God’s Word – they absolutely do. But it’s the way we present it to them that will make all the difference in the world.

Unblemished by Sara Ella

This book – wow. I loved it and it is now sitting on my daughter’s bookshelf waiting for her to dive in. There is so much this book has to offer her, but the one thing I want her to gain from it – beauty comes from within. If you have a “blemish” on your face it does not make you ugly. God sees your inner beauty, and so will your future husband. All girls need to hear this message, especially in today’s superficial world.

The Wedding Dress by Rachel Hauck

The truth is, I would recommend all of Rachel Hauck’s stories to my daughter. I love the back and forth between time periods that she offers and I think my daughter would too. I picked this one because of the title – The Wedding Dress. Something every little girl thinks about until their wedding day. From that perspective this is a fun book that I think she would enjoy reading while dreaming of her future wedding day.

True to You by Becky Wade

Nora is another one of those characters who doesn’t realize that she’s beautiful and special, something many young women today feel. And I know this story is mainly about romance (and I cannot wait for the next book to come out!), but that’s okay. Young women (maybe the older teens) need Christian romance in my opinion. They need good examples of how a Christian couple should act and what happens when they don’t follow God’s Word. Again, may not be suitable for a younger teen, but I know that my own daughter is mature enough to enjoy this story.

The Heart Between Us by Lindsay Harrel

This book was amazing and fun. Just something I think my daughter would enjoy, as she has an interest in traveling around the world. And there’s some good messages too 🙂

A Refuge Assured by Jocelyn Green

I loved this book. It was rich in history – and while it is fictional, I think it’s a great tool to bring up historical discussions. Now, I would not recommend this to a young or immature teenager. Definitely to an older one who is mature enough to handle some of the things that take place in this story. With a daughter who is starting to dabble in historical fiction, I thought this would be a great book for her to read.

The Forgotten Recipe by Amy Clipston

My daughter has absolutely no interest in Amish fiction – um…she doesn’t take after me at all. But, this book may be a turning point for her because it has something she is interested in – recipes! Out of all the Amish books I have read, I really think this is one she might like. So if you have a young woman out there who turns away from Amish fiction, recommend this one. I think it just might change their minds!

So there you have it! I have many more books to recommend of course, but these are the top ten that came to mind. What books would you recommend to a younger reader? Or what book did you read as a teenager that changed your life? Happy Tuesday friends!

  1. This list of books definitely applies to women of any age truly. Jocelyn Green writes stunningly beautiful fiction. I’ve not met a book of hers that hasn’t left me in a shimmering daze once finished.

  2. Wow, thank you so much for including Justice! You’re making both Jake and me blush 😉 What an honor to be mentioned alongside such wonderful authors and novels. I hope your daughter enjoys Jake and Brookly’s story if she reads it!
