vannettaAbout the Book

Life in Abney, Texas, is predictable and safe–until the night a massive solar flare wipes out all modern technology.

Shelby Sparks, novelist and single mom, had one goal: to provide for her diabetic son. In the wake of this global disaster, her mission hasn’t changed. Only now, medication is a priceless commodity and the future resembles an apocalyptic nightmare.

Max Berkman and Shelby were once sweethearts, but he lost his chance at claiming her love years ago. When the abrupt loss of power ushers him into a leadership role, he rises to the occasion. But his highest priority–to keep Shelby and her son safe–could prove to be the biggest challenge of all.

As the brilliant northern lights give way to deep shadows, Max and Shelby’s faith will be tested like never before. Only one rule remains: Find a way to survive.

My Review

I have been an avid reader for a long time and have always read a book for enjoyment, to escape reality. Every now and then I come across a book that shakes me, makes me think and wonder, and causes me to take a step back and relook at my surroundings. This. Was. That. Book. Do not let the author’s name fool you! I have been reading Vannetta’s Amish fiction for a long time and I love the way she writes them. This book was totally different, and not just because it wasn’t about Amish people. I feel like I have found a deeper part of Vannetta to connect with, a raw emotional part that has been building up over the years just begging to come out in book form. Typically I feel a connection with characters, however in reading this book I felt a connection to the author.

I am typically a quick reader, however with this book I chose to take my time and recommend that you do the same. Deep Shadows will make you take a look around and wonder. You will think to yourself, could this happen to our world today? I know I did. Not only did I think about this book while I was reading, I thought about it during the day, at night when I couldn’t sleep. I just kept thinking about what this world full of technology would do if one day it wasn’t available. How would people survive? And more importantly, would I lose my faith in God, or lean on Him like the characters in the book.

Although the entire book consisted of a very heavy topic, I appreciated Vannetta’s willingness to show the characters faith. I enjoyed the local pastor who wouldn’t give up in a world of darkness. I especially enjoyed the church scenes where he lifted up the name of the Lord, refused to let the circumstances alter his view of the Lord, and encourage his congregation to do the same. I think this could be applied to our world today. Although we have not suffered from a solar flare, we do live in trying times and need to lean on the Lord now more than ever.

I highly recommend this book to everyone. While I understand a deep topic such as a solar flare (which I learned are real – thank you Vannetta!) is not for everyone, I encourage you to try this with an open mind. Look at it as a book that shows how a community can try to come together during a crisis, or how a mother will do anything to save her son, or how a friendship is tested. You will not regret it!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and publisher in exchange for my honest review which I have given.
