1883 California Trail, Kansas

Missouri mules were the best. Alda grew to love the creatures working side by side with her pa on their farm along the banks of the Missouri River. He would be hopping mad when he realized his wife and daughter colluded behind his back to sell a pack string. It wouldn’t matter that they were trying to save the farm.

Alda struck out on her own to drive the team over fifteen hundred miles. By day three, her lead mule Bessie refused to take one more step. It was a good thing the handsome cowboy Cord stopped by to lend a hand or Alda might still be sitting in the dust.

Now, Alda needed the man to move on so she could continue her journey. Judging by the spark in Cord’s eye … it just might take some convincing.

My Perspective

If you would have told me a few months ago that I was going to read a book about mules, I probably would have laughed. Mules? Sure, they are cute, but who has a use for them? Flickinger’s Fool’s Notion has made me a believer. Now granted the mules weren’t the main part of the story line per se, but I did enjoy reading about them and Alda’s adoration for them.

Perhaps that biggest scene stealer, however, was Cord. Handsome? Yes. Bounty hunter? Yes. Stealer of hearts? You betcha! Cord was strong, determined, and just over all a good guy. Now, do I think it is weird that a Christian was a bounty hunter? Kind of. But the way Flickinger writes this character, it just all makes sense. From the very first time he saved Alda I was hooked. The interaction with Cord and the meddlesome bad guy was actually quite funny at times to be honest, and that’s when I knew that Cord was going to be my favorite.

Not only is this story about Alda’s journey across the west, but her journey as a person. This sweet story is sure to put a smile on your face on a rainy afternoon. I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
