My Thoughts on Caught by Surprise by Jen Turano

Reader friends, the books of 2018 continue to blow my mind. I still have several more to read of course, but my goodness. I am simply amazed at the quality of the books being released this year! My list of favorite authors is about a billion pages long now – so I can’t even call them favorites anymore. They are all my favorites 🙂 Today I’m thrilled to share my overdue thoughts on Jen Turano’s Caught by Surprise. If you haven’t read it, then I highly suggest you change that immediately. You will laugh, chuckle, smile, laugh some more, chuckle some more, well you get the picture. Just go read it!!

Miss Temperance Flowerdew is on her way to work when a stranger suddenly grabs her off the street and sends her on a Chicago-bound train before she can figure out what happened.

When Mr. Gilbert Cavendish is called upon to rescue a missing woman, he follows the trail to Chicago only to discover that the woman is his good friend Temperance. Before they can discover who was behind the abduction, they’re seen alone together by a New York society matron, putting their reputations at risk.

Gilbert is willing to propose marriage–except Temperance will have none of it. She’s finally stepped out of the shadow of her relations and won’t give up her independence. But when it becomes clear the misunderstanding in Chicago has escalated into a threat on her life and followed her to New York, accepting Gilbert’s help in solving the mystery may lead to more than she ever could have dreamed.

My Perspective

Have you ever had an author that you know you are going to love their book when it releases, and you tend to just look at the book for awhile before finally picking it up and diving in? But then you don’t want to read it too fast becuase then it will be over, and you’ll have a huge book hangover and will be anxiously awaiting the next release to come out. So instead you try to read it slow, so you can savor each word, each scene, and each character. Let me just say that this is my intent going into a Jen Turano book, but sometimed my fingers get the best of me and I find myself devouring the book, much like Caught by Surprise.

First of all, I love Turano’s writing style. There is never a dull moment and typically my cheeks are a little sore from laughing and smiling so much. Her books are just fun to read, plain and simple. Some of the things that happen to these characters, Temperance in particular, are so outlandishly funny and out there, but they make complete sense in the story line. In other words, Turano has found a way to make the most odd circumstances sound completely normal for these characters. Like a wild kidnapping (I’m not saying anymore than that because you truly have to read it to get the full affect) – it seems like a bizarre scenario when you’re talking about it with your daughter as you’re describing the book, but when reading the book it was completely normal.

Among the fun and laughter was a couple of strong characters whom I absolutely adored. Dare I say this is my favorite Jen Turano couple? Yes, I dare. Temperance and Gilbert are friends first, which is really my favorite kind of pairing. Not only that, their banter is light, refreshing, and adorable. Temperance and Gilbert truly know each other, inside and out. They know how to get on each other’s nerves (and they do!), they know how to help each other, and they can 100% be themselves around each other. This is a couple I will be thinking about for a long time!

Turano continues to amaze me with her stories. While I am sorry to see this particular series go, I truly cannot wait to see what else Turano has in store for her readers! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
