One of them is a prisoner and one of them is free. The same one.

Bookstore owner Meryn O’Reilly and Army Captain Jesse Christensen are on opposite sides of a battle. When martial law is declared, Jesse and his platoon are sent to Meryn’s city to keep an eye on the Christians and make sure they are not stepping outside of the confines of the law.

Fiery and quick-tempered, Meryn chafes under the curfew and other restrictions to her freedom. Jesse is equally amused, intrigued, and terrified by her spirit, knowing she could find herself in prison if she shows defiance to the wrong soldier.

His worst fears are realized when she commits a crime he cannot protect her from. Now they both face an uncertain future, and the very real threat of losing everything, including their lives. With time running out, Jesse works feverishly to convince the authorities to show leniency to Meryn. And to convince her that love can overcome any barrier that lies between them.

Their relationship deepens, but so does Lieutenant Gallagher’s hatred for the Christians in their city. As Gallagher’s power grows, it becomes clear that his connections go much further up the chain of command than anyone realized, putting all believers, especially Jesse, in extreme danger.

Meryn wants to give her heart to Jesse fully, but her past holds her back. Although circumstances conspire to keep her silent, she needs to tell him her secret. When he finds out what she has been keeping from him, nothing will stand between them anymore.

MY PERSPECTIVE – THE END BEGINS

This is the most thought provoking story I’ve read in a while. The entire time I was reading the story, I kept putting myself in Meryn’s shoes and wondered if I would react the same way that she did. Would I take a stand for Christ? Would I accept punishment with grace? Let’s face it, the way our world is headed, it may very well be that bibles will be illegal, and showing our faith will be frowned upon. The author absolutely hit the nail on the head here.

I enjoyed the layout of the story as well. Army Captain Jesse Christensen was such an interesting character. A man, forced to follow the lead of his superiors, but deep down in his heart was a little something stirring and telling him it was not right. He needed to meet the Lord, and to watch his transition throughout the book was a powerful reminder that it’s not too late for anyone. They may not “see the light” right away, but little things here and there will point people to what they ultimately need, a relationship with Jesus. I found his story to be sweet and encouraging. Yes, there were times where I didn’t understand why he continued to go along with government control, but as you keep reading it all comes together and you begin to understand.

This is a book that surprised me, in a good way. I look forward to reading what is next for these characters, and encourage others to read it as well. It just might be similar to what our world will be facing in the years to come! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I’m quite intrigued by these books! They’re new to me and I’m looking forward to reading them!

  2. Myra Ball

I’m excited to read this series. The series has the feel of realistic science fiction that Christians should take to heart. We currently have it good in America where freedom of religion is still possible. Sara Davidson is a new author to me but seems talented.
